When Composure Becomes Currency

May 11, 2026

Some lessons in corporate life are taught.
Others are survived.

From Miss Easter’s Little Book of Corporate Fables:

The Swan and the Still Water

The swan moved without sound.

Calm.
Controlled.
Effortless to anyone watching.

Beneath the surface, her feet moved fast.

Adjusting.
Correcting.
Working to stay afloat.

The other birds admired her composure.
They called it grace.

So they gave her more to carry.

More visibility.
More responsibility.
More expectation.

She didn’t push back.
She kept the surface still.

Until one day…

She stopped moving beneath it.

And the water took her under.

The lesson:
Composure can become a performance people learn to depend on.

Leadership implication:
When people only experience your calm, they often mistake it for endless capacity.

And that is how high performers disappear.
